Vets in action: All Dogs Matter Camp

Keeping dogs healthy is really important. One of the best ways to do this is by giving them vaccinations and other treatments that prevent illnesses and disease, so they don’t get sick in the first place.

Sadly, sometimes owners aren’t able to get their dogs the treatment they need. This might be because they can’t afford to pay for a vet, or because there aren’t any vets nearby that can help them.

The All Dogs Matter Camp in Goa, India, was set up to help all owners keep their dogs healthy, by providing free care. At the camp, dogs were given vaccinations against rabies, general health checks, and they were spayed or neutered, which is when they have surgery so that they don’t have puppies.

What we achieved:

  • 2,593 dogs spayed and neutered
  • 2,900 animals vaccinated against rabies
  • 104 dogs treated for other injuries or conditions

One of the most important things at the camp was making sure all the dogs that came were looked after, and that they didn't get stressed!

Why is spaying and neutering important?

Spaying (female dogs) or neutering (male dogs), is when dogs have surgery to stop them having puppies. This is really important for keeping them healthy for lots of reasons.

It stops there being too many dogs:

When unwanted puppies are abandoned, they struggle to find food, and often get ill with no one to care for them.

It stops the spread of disease:

If there are lots of dogs in one place it is easy for diseases like rabies to pass between dogs and onto people.

It protects them from illnesses:

There are some viruses or diseases that only happen if a dog isn't spayed or neutered, so this surgery helps keep them safe.
