A new life for Ozzy, rescued in Thailand

You might have seen Ozzy on posters this summer - read on to learn about his story!

A new life for Ozzy, rescued in Thailand

Hey there, Young Vet Adventurer!

You might have seen some pictures of Ozzy recently, on posters out and about or on our social media or blogs. We thought we’d tell you his full story!

If you're a Young Vets Club member, you know that WVS has 5 clinics where animals get help when they're hurt or unwell. We also train vets and vet nurses, and support local communities to care for animals – it's all part of our mission to raise the standard of veterinary care across the world. These places are called International Training Centres (ITCs), and they're located in India, Thailand, Malawi, and the Galapagos Islands.

The Chiang Mai Centre in Thailand

One of the ITCs is in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. In 2023, over 7,000 animals were helped here, and already this year they have helped over 5,000! The vets perform spay/neuter surgeries which stop cats and dogs from reproducing, give them vaccines to keep them healthy, and even have a rescue and rehoming program for animals in trouble.

Meet Ozzy the Puppy

One day, a tiny puppy named Ozzy was brought to the Chiang Mai centre. It was December 2022, and poor Ozzy was in a lot of pain. His eye was very swollen and infected. Before coming to the ITC, another animal hospital couldn't help him. His eye problem was so bad that his eyelashes were poking into his eye, making it even worse.

Ozzy's Treatment

The vets in Chiang Mai knew exactly what to do. They gave Ozzy medicine to help with the pain and cleaned his eye every day. They found out that Ozzy had a condition called microphthalmos, which means his eye didn’t grow properly. The best way to help him was to remove the eye through a surgery called enucleation.

The surgery went perfectly! The very next day, Ozzy was happily playing again, bouncing around his kennel and having fun in the dog park.

Finding Ozzy a home

After Ozzy got better, it was time to find him a loving home. But Ozzy was a bit shy around new people, which made it hard to find someone who would adopt him. Months went by until two wonderful volunteers, Callum and Rebecca, met Ozzy. They fell in love with him and decided they couldn't go home without him!

Now, Ozzy lives with Callum and Rebecca. He’s a happy and healthy dog, enjoying his new life. We are so happy for Ozzy and his new family!
